Learning how to identify keywords is very important to the success of your online business. A keyword will indicate what people are searching on the Internet and you shouldn’t just choose any keyword because not all keywords are the same. In this article we’re going to look at some basic guidelines to ensure that you identify the right keywords for your business.

4 Characteristics of a Golden Keyword

  • Relevant - Your keyword must be relevant to your prospect. Avoid broad terms like make money online, weight loss, etc.
  • Traffic - I look for keywords that have 2,000 monthly searches but I also go for less provided that the keyword is very targeted and relevant.
  • Competition - Check out if there are many authority sites that are ranking in the search results. One simple trick I learned is to get the average page rank for the first page. If the average is 3 and below then I would consider it.
  • Commercial Intent - There are people who are searching for free information and there are those who are ready to buy. What would you type in the search engines if you were looking to buy a product to solve your problem?

My Keyword Research RoutineI use the free Google Keyword Tool and I start with a very broad keyword. Let’s enter in ‘weight loss’ and check out some of the other keywords that the tool will show.

The first set of keywords are still too broad so we still need to drill down some more to come up with more targeted keywords. We’re going to choose ‘weight loss diet’ from our initial list of keywords. We enter it again so you’ll get a new set of keywords.

If you’ll notice, the keywords got longer and this is what we exactly want. These are called long-tail keywords and they’re made up of 3 or more keywords. We can still drill down some more but for now I’m going to use ‘weight loss detox diet’.

Determining Competition

When we search our keyword in Google we have over 800,000 competing websites. But in order to get the real number of competition we have to put the terms in double quotes. The reason for this is that you’re asking Google to return only the pages that are really optimized for the exact terms.

Please remember that this has nothing to do with how a typical user searches the web. From over 800,000, we now only have 200K optimized results. This is still a huge competition but this is still not the real number of competition. If you click page 10 and up until the last page of the search results, you’ll discover that there are only 481 websites.

The number for the competition that you want is less than 10,000 so 481 is going to be an easy term to rank for especially if you write an article and submit it to an article directory.

Keyword density is not AS important. I would try to write naturally first, before you worry about density. Remember, everything that is HTML counts towards density, footers, menus, side bar etc.

You can wind-up over optimizing. I would write naturally, use at least an H1 tag and then work on backlinks. Ever check a cached version of a site a never find the keywords even on the page?

You would see this “These terms only appear in links pointing to this page:”

So, keywords are important but I wouldn’t worry about density. Use backlinks to help boost you up. If density was the only factor, then everyone would rank well, once they guessed the right percentage that is.

Is it possible to have a keyword phrase in your keyword meta tags? Example: is it possible to use the phrase “new cellphone” as a keyword phrase, by not separating the words with a comma? Or do keyword phrases in meta tags not exist? Would it just be better off to list my keywords like this? “new, cellphone, …”? Expert advice needed…
1) You can use both keywords and phrases. A combination would be recommened. In your example, you can use “new cellphone, new handset, new mobile phone”. There’s no need to use space if you are already using comma as a delimiter 2) You should be selective of the words in the keyword meta tag because you should limit yourself to only 10 to 12 words. 3) Make sure that you keywords in the meta tag are also found in the content of your pages. 4) Do not use too much repetitions of the same words. 5) Avoid using the same keyword tags in all of your pages. 6) Many engines do not bother with the keyword meta tag. This is because the emphasis is on the actual text content and headers rather then the meta tags. I believe it must have been overly abused to a point where some search engines can’t be bothered with this tag anymore. Place more emphasis and effort on your content.
