The definition of a keyword, in relation to e-Businesses or internet marketing, is a word searched for by information retrieval systems (search engines) to indicate the importance of the content to the website business.
Search engines thrive on keywords, that is their business, they do it for their customers, the public at large, to give them the best sites and products available.
So however much we decry them, we have to work with them to gain the best advantage for our web businesses (e-Business). You have to think of them as your friend and try to gain their respect by conforming to their rules.
The selection of a wrong or unrelated set of keywords will block the flow of traffic to your website and will adversely affect the site conversion rate. It is important to pick high demand keywords as the ones most relevant to your site. Keywords in heavy demand at the search engines are those that are commonly searched for by online searchers. However, the selection of less popular keywords will not attract an influx of customers to your website.
In deciding your strategy for implementing your correct keywords to use on your website, you must have in mind your target audience, as they will take an active role in deciding the selection of your site. If you target the younger surfer then the key words or phrases should be trendy, stylish and up to the minute. This type of targeting will vary from country to country and area to area. Just using these simple methods should intensify your S E O marketing strategy and show positive effective results by bring more traffic to your site.
One good way to understand the value of your keywords is to, do some lateral thinking, and pretend that it is you searching for the products, or service you are promoting on your website.
Ask yourself what would be the main, or related words that you would use to search for your particular product or service. Be ruthless and do not favor one keyword against another just because it means deleting it from your original list. When you are finished check them out in the keyword tool on Google, or Word-tracker.
Here is a breakdown of what you need to do:
- Construct a list of keywords
- Do a search on Google
- Extract the most important keywords.
- Search competitor sites for more ideas.
The main aim of this exercise is to establish what words, or combination of keywords, people enter into their browsers when searching for your product or service. If you can identify the ones that are the most used with medium competition from your competitors then you are heading in the right direction.
Remember that heavy demand for keywords means heavy demand for the product they describe. This brings a problem, because heavy competition means more difficulty in entering this type of market. But if you can crack the heavy competition market then you can achieve great success.
When you are deciding your list of keywords remember to look for any negative ones. These are the ones, that by themselves, have alternative meanings. However these can be used successfully in a combination of words to further the keywords intended meaning.
Another problem most people have with keywords, is how many times a keyword or phrase is entered on a web page compared to the total number of words on the page. This is called keyword density and can be used as a factor to determine whether a web page has relevance to a specific keyword or keyword phrase.
One final point, remember to do a spell check on all your keywords and keyword phrases. It would be pity to miss being given a good page ranking by the search engine spiders just because of a spelling mistake.
