Learning how to identify keywords is very important to the success of your online business. A keyword will indicate what people are searching on the Internet and you shouldn’t just choose any keyword because not all keywords are the same. In this article we’re going to look at some basic guidelines to ensure that you identify the right keywords for your business.

4 Characteristics of a Golden Keyword

  • Relevant - Your keyword must be relevant to your prospect. Avoid broad terms like make money online, weight loss, etc.
  • Traffic - I look for keywords that have 2,000 monthly searches but I also go for less provided that the keyword is very targeted and relevant.
  • Competition - Check out if there are many authority sites that are ranking in the search results. One simple trick I learned is to get the average page rank for the first page. If the average is 3 and below then I would consider it.
  • Commercial Intent - There are people who are searching for free information and there are those who are ready to buy. What would you type in the search engines if you were looking to buy a product to solve your problem?

My Keyword Research RoutineI use the free Google Keyword Tool and I start with a very broad keyword. Let’s enter in ‘weight loss’ and check out some of the other keywords that the tool will show.

The first set of keywords are still too broad so we still need to drill down some more to come up with more targeted keywords. We’re going to choose ‘weight loss diet’ from our initial list of keywords. We enter it again so you’ll get a new set of keywords.

If you’ll notice, the keywords got longer and this is what we exactly want. These are called long-tail keywords and they’re made up of 3 or more keywords. We can still drill down some more but for now I’m going to use ‘weight loss detox diet’.

Determining Competition

When we search our keyword in Google we have over 800,000 competing websites. But in order to get the real number of competition we have to put the terms in double quotes. The reason for this is that you’re asking Google to return only the pages that are really optimized for the exact terms.

Please remember that this has nothing to do with how a typical user searches the web. From over 800,000, we now only have 200K optimized results. This is still a huge competition but this is still not the real number of competition. If you click page 10 and up until the last page of the search results, you’ll discover that there are only 481 websites.

The number for the competition that you want is less than 10,000 so 481 is going to be an easy term to rank for especially if you write an article and submit it to an article directory.

The definition of a keyword, in relation to e-Businesses or internet marketing, is a word searched for by information retrieval systems (search engines) to indicate the importance of the content to the website business.

Search engines thrive on keywords, that is their business, they do it for their customers, the public at large, to give them the best sites and products available.

So however much we decry them, we have to work with them to gain the best advantage for our web businesses (e-Business). You have to think of them as your friend and try to gain their respect by conforming to their rules.

The selection of a wrong or unrelated set of keywords will block the flow of traffic to your website and will adversely affect the site conversion rate. It is important to pick high demand keywords as the ones most relevant to your site. Keywords in heavy demand at the search engines are those that are commonly searched for by online searchers. However, the selection of less popular keywords will not attract an influx of customers to your website.

In deciding your strategy for implementing your correct keywords to use on your website, you must have in mind your target audience, as they will take an active role in deciding the selection of your site. If you target the younger surfer then the key words or phrases should be trendy, stylish and up to the minute. This type of targeting will vary from country to country and area to area. Just using these simple methods should intensify your S E O marketing strategy and show positive effective results by bring more traffic to your site.

One good way to understand the value of your keywords is to, do some lateral thinking, and pretend that it is you searching for the products, or service you are promoting on your website.

Ask yourself what would be the main, or related words that you would use to search for your particular product or service. Be ruthless and do not favor one keyword against another just because it means deleting it from your original list. When you are finished check them out in the keyword tool on Google, or Word-tracker.

Here is a breakdown of what you need to do:

  1. Construct a list of keywords
  2. Do a search on Google
  3. Extract the most important keywords.
  4. Search competitor sites for more ideas.

The main aim of this exercise is to establish what words, or combination of keywords, people enter into their browsers when searching for your product or service. If you can identify the ones that are the most used with medium competition from your competitors then you are heading in the right direction.

Remember that heavy demand for keywords means heavy demand for the product they describe. This brings a problem, because heavy competition means more difficulty in entering this type of market. But if you can crack the heavy competition market then you can achieve great success.

When you are deciding your list of keywords remember to look for any negative ones. These are the ones, that by themselves, have alternative meanings. However these can be used successfully in a combination of words to further the keywords intended meaning.

Another problem most people have with keywords, is how many times a keyword or phrase is entered on a web page compared to the total number of words on the page. This is called keyword density and can be used as a factor to determine whether a web page has relevance to a specific keyword or keyword phrase.

One final point, remember to do a spell check on all your keywords and keyword phrases. It would be pity to miss being given a good page ranking by the search engine spiders just because of a spelling mistake.

The Market Research Commandments Part 2
Ignore This Methodology At Your Demise

There are tons of marketers out there who teach various methods for performing market research and they have some good information to share on some new bit of good advice or a new tool which will give you an edge when finding markets to pursue.

What I am about to show you is as fool proof of a step by step list of marketing research as you will find anywhere. This is a no fluff way to uncover the traffic, sales potential, product positioning and competition analysis you need to have the best chance to succeed possible.

There are essentially four main steps to what I will call my “marketing research commandments”:

* Find High Volume Traffic Keyword Searches
* Target Want Market Keywords that have Commercial Value
* Introduce Traffic Streams to USP products and services
* Target Low Competition keywords which allow a quick ROI

Everyone knows finding high volume traffic keywords is essential to succeeding in online marketing, because without a constant stream of relevant visitors to your web site your business will not earn a return on investment and become a waste of time. This is why I use two tools to initially uncover large market area keywords right out of the gate once I know what area I am interested to investigate.

how can i accuratley tell which keywords to use based on search traffic and search result numbers? for instance how many searches per day based on word tracker would be good to have minimum and how many results from google/ competition maximum?

There is no exact rule for this. But, just an opinion, 40 daily searches minimum or 1,200 per month would be comfortable for beginners. Anywhere between 30K-50K competitors may be the max. 100K competitors would be serious keywords for me.
